The first fifty pages of a manuscript are crucial to getting a book project off the ground. Interested agents will often ask for those pages before asking for a complete manuscript. Editors and readers will put down a book if the beginning doesn’t grab them. We can get a good idea of how well a book is functioning from the first one or two chapters. Fixing issues in those first pages can trickle down into the rest of the manuscript and edits on the beginning of a book rather than the whole can feel less overwhelming to tackle. I’m offering consultations on the first fifty pages of a novel for $100. I would be happy to send you a thoughtful one or two page write up. I’m especially keen on letting a writer know what I think they’re doing well. Sometimes this can be more helpful than hearing what’s going wrong! I’m also happy to answer questions after you receive the write up by email or by phone. If this sounds interesting, please contact me.
